Now I concede. Humans, not an alien race or a giant piece of space rock, will one day destroy their very own civilization.
Call it cunning. I say it`s stupid. Call it wise political strategy. I say it`s greedy. And diabolically so.
As most of my fellow International Relations students would know, one situation is slowly becoming an international hot-spot: the overlapping claims of several countries for ownership of the Northern Passage- the North Pole.
Canada`s prime minister, who seems to be finding nostalgia in the fact that these overlapping claims are making Canada`s foreign policy-making less boring, recently announced his intentions to establish a military outpost up there.
No, he`s not preparing to defend Canada against an army of penguins.
He is doing so in response to Russian President Vladimi Putin`s recent act of sending little submarines deep through the bottom of the icy North Pole to plant a tiny Russian Flag.
So, yes. Canada is trying to defend itself against a flag.
Both countries, along with Norway and Denmark (through its possession of Greenland) say that, by virtue of a little theory regarding continental shelfs, the North Pole belongs to them.
My question is: why now?
I mean these countries have been lying up there near the North Pole ever since Pangea drifted apart. How come they are asserting ownership only now?
The answer: global warming.
Because of our greenhouse emissions (majority of which are produced by industrial countries), the atmosphere is getting warm. Because the atmosphere is getting warm, the ice of the North Pole is melting.
And because the ice is melting, voila! Twenty-five percent of the world`s undiscovered oil deposits is becoming exposed!
So it`s not the North Pole afterall, but what`s underneath it.
These polar countries want to earn money by drilling up the North Pole oil deposits.
Yes, they want to sell us more fuel to destroy our planet.
What?! Atienza is the new DENR secretary? Since when?
Hey Jonah, saw your post about Nuts Entertainment in Multiply. Couldn`t comment because for some reasons users from Japan can`t access comment page in your blog.
Anyway, that human tetris game is quite popular here in Tokyo. I do watch it every week (or used to before I became busy). Can`t believe Nuts would plagiarize it. Shame on them. Waah! Losers! Hehehe.

Well, I believe Russia is insecure of herself.
What`s the leverage behind Russia`s reassertion of itself? It`s vast reserve of oil and gas. It bullies its neighbors and the European Union through threats of price increase in its energy resources.
I find it funny. Russia boasts of vast resources yet it can`t even deliver economically to its own people. At least not without resorting to economic version.
If anything else, I thing Russia is just like Venezuela. Full of rethoric. Yet empty.

Posted by thenutbox at September 1, 2007, 11:23 pmthanks for the correction dude.

As always, international and national policies of different nations toward environmental crusades remain masksfor political agenda. This is not surprising at all, considering what happened to the “supposed” International Agreement for the Reduction of Global Emissions. Political motivations remain the primary moving force behind so-called “green crusades”. The same goes with our country — but that’s another topic all together. Hello! Mr. DENR Secretary Atienza!
